When you’re travel planning, usually the easiest things that everyone knows how to do is booking your flight, or rental service, and you can usually do it without getting ripped off too badly. Now, hotels? That’s a whole different ballgame. Nine times out of ten, you’re most likely going to be overpaying, if you didn’t hit the travel lottery and get a sweet hook-up by someone you know in the business. A bad hotel can not only ruin your spending budget, but it can also really put a damper on your entire vacation.

Getting a bad hotel because you tried to cut some corners can be disastrous. But, it doesn’t have to be. There are some guidelines you can follow to avoid booking a nightmare hotel or one that prevents your trip from providing that perfect getaway you’ve been dreaming about.

Get the Perfect Location

This is where the power of the internet shines, thanks to Google Maps and extensive customer reviews that are now common. You can pinpoint your hotel’s location with how many amenities are nearby so that you aren’t stuck in a place that somehow doesn’t have a proper coffee shop or an ATM that won’t charge you $10 for using it. Good way to burn through cash from hidden fees racked up from going out without cash on you.

You can even plan out your entire days in-advanced by browsing the nearby restaurants and shopping plazas, if you have that kind of time on your hands. Hey, time saved on vacation is less opportunity for stress to invade your time away.

The Best Rooms

Choosing the best hotels doesn’t automatically mean you’ll get the best rooms. Last-minute changes while on vacation are a no-no, so you want to make sure you don’t check into a room that is not up to par with your expectations. Think about which direction your room will be facing. Some of the best hotels have less than stellar views if you choose the wrong side, facing, possibly, another hotel’s siding. You can also use Google’s Street View to map the hotel’s room locations or the hotel review sites to see if anyone recommends which room’s to avoid or book.

Hotel Reviews

These review sites can sometimes be inaccurate, naturally, that’s why you should take every review for a grain of salt. Grains adding up to a giant mess of unhappiness is what you should pay attention to. If you skim them and try to look for patterns, rather than personal gripes, you can glean a lot of good information from them. I know a lot of people like to act like spoiled brats when on vacation, you can usually tell when they complain about very minor details and constantly make comparisons to other hotels, that doesn’t scream “objective” review to me, so steer clear from them, they could very well be paid reviews to subtract from nearby competitors and the webmasters have been taking steps to filter them out.
